Teenagers blame parents for 'poisoned legacy'

Brexit and unaffordable housing, study says
The results come as part of a wider survey that has led teens to be labelled “Generation Angst” for their concerns over Brexit, the economy and society

A majority of youngsters feel that their parents have left them a poisoned legacy through Brexit and an unaffordable housing market, a new survey found.

Only 14 per cent of 16 to 18 year-olds now feel confident about their future since the UK voted to leave the EU, according to the Edelman Trust Barometer – a long running survey into social attitudes towards trust and credibility.

Some 52 per cent of those surveyed think the referendum result should not be acted on, with 63 per cent thinking the Brexit vote will have a negative effect on political stability in Europe.

More than three quarters of teenagers  also said their greatest concerns for the future were an increasing cost of living, with more than 60 per cent of respondents worried that they will not be able to afford their own home.

The results come as part of a wider survey that has led teenagers to be labelled “Generation Angst” for their concerns over Brexit, the economy and society.

While the national survey shows that tomorrow’s adults are alarmed by the legacy of Brexit, and agonise about their financial security, they are distrusting of all institutions to do what is right for their future. Asked to chose who they might vote for to be the Prime Minister between the likes of Theresa May, current Mayor of London Sadiq Khan or Brexit Secretary David Davis, teenagers said "none of the above."

According to the Edelman Trust, teenagers are also set to become the first victims of the “social media explosion” as the world moves too quickly for them to keep up with.

Despite three-quarters of young people using social media every single day, some 59 per cent are worried about the pace of change.

Ed Williams, chief executive of Edelman UK & Ireland, said that what we see is a "troubling picture"

"Most of them believe under 18s should get the vote, and had they had the vote in the EU Referendum, 2 in 3 would have voted to Remain," he told The Independent.

In their view, Brexit will negatively impact not only the UK economy, but European stability, society and, perhaps most worryingly, their futures.

"It’s not surprising then that most think the Referendum result shouldn’t be acted upon.

"Politically they don’t see anyone in the current government or waiting in the wings who has shown they understand the problems this generation faces – let alone the solutions.

“This survey offers a chance for politicians, for business and the media, to understand attitudes of acohort that will soon be voting as well as forming lasting relationships with brands and media sources."
